Since 1992, the Argentine peso has been the currency of Argentina, replacing the austral. Subdivided into 100 centavos, the currency derives its name from the Spanish silver eight-real coin, commonly known as the peso.

Following its independence in 1816, the country started issuing reales, soles, escudos, and silver eight-real coins. These coins were in circulation in Argentina alongside currency from neighboring countries until 1881.

In 1881, Argentina introduced silver coins in denominations of 10, 20, 50 centavos, and a gold 1-peso coin. In the subsequent year, a 1-centavo and a 2-centavo bronze coins were put into circulation. In 1896, 5, 10, and 20 centavos coins were introduced, and a 50-centavo coin was later added in 1941.

In 1992, with the introduction of the new Argentine peso came the new coins in 1, 5, 10, 25, and 50 centavos. In 1994, a 1-peso was added, and in 2010, a two-peso coin was also introduced. This set of coins feature a laurel wreath, the Argentine coat of arms, the cabildo of Buenos Aires, the Casa Tucuman, and the Sun of May.

Another series of coins was issued in 2017 in denominations of 1 and 5 pesos. Subsequently, in 2018, the issuance extended to include 2-peso and 10-peso coins. These coins highlight flowering trees endemic to Argentina: the Jaracanda, Palo Borracho, Arrayan, and Calden. One side of these coins features the tree itself and the other side displays the blossoming flower.
