In 1855, Australia’s first official mint in Sydney was established. From 1855 to 1870, it produced gold coins with their own original design, with "Sydney Mint, Australia, One Sovereign” inscription on one side and the profile of Queen Victoria on the other. In 1870, Sydney Mint started producing coins designed by the UK. British coins were in use until it was replaced with the Australian silver coins in 1910.

Australian coins included florins, shillings, sixpences and threepences, depicting King Edward VII. These were followed with the introduction of the pennies and half-pennies.

In February 1966, the decimal currency system was introduced in the country, replacing the Australian pound with the Australian dollar. The new coins included denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, and 50 cents.

In 1984, Australia issued a 1-dollar coin for the first time, followed by the issuance of a 2-dollar coin in 1988.
