Derived from the Latin term “moneta” which means “coin”, the manat is the official currency of the Republic of Azerbaijan. The currency is subdivided into 100 gapiks. The first manat were issued by the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic and the Azerbaijani Soviet Socialist Republic between 1919 and 1923, until it was replaced with the second Transcaucasian ruble.

Following its independence from the Soviet Union, the Azerbaijan manat was reintroduced on August 15, 1992. The nation issued coins dated 1992 and 1993 in denominations of 5, 10, 20, and 50 gapiks. Coins from 1992 were made of brass and copper-nickel, while later issues were made of aluminium. These coins depict the denomination of one side. Their reverse respectively displays three fire symbols, an eight-angled star, a moon crescent and star, and the Maiden Tower, which is also known as Qız Qalası.

In October 2005, the currency was revalued, prompting the introduction of new coins in 2006. These coins were issued in denominations of 1, 3, 5, 10, 20, and 50 gapiks, each closely resembling the size and shape of euro coins. They share the same design on their obverse, depicting the Azerbaijan map, the denomination, and the country name. Their reverse shows various design elements with the 1-gapik showing traditional musical instruments, books and quill on the 3-gapik coin, and the Maiden Tower on the 5-gapik. The 10-gapik coin is decorated with a military helmet of the region of Nagorno-Karabakh, while the 20-gapik is designed with a spiral staircase and geometrical symbols, and the 50-gapik coin with oil wells.
