Guatemala / 2 Products

Guatemala, officially known as the Republic of Guatemala, is a country located in Central America, bordered by Mexico to the north and west, Belize to the northeast, Honduras to the east, and El Salvador to the southeast. Its diverse landscape encompasses lush rainforests, volcanoes, mountains, and coastal plains along the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea.

During its colonial era, Guatemala used Spanish colonial coins. After gaining independence in 1821, it briefly joined the Mexican Empire before becoming part of the United Provinces of Central America. In 1847, Guatemala began issuing its own currency, with coins denominated in pesos and reales, reflecting its evolving political and economic landscape.

In the 20th and 21st centuries, Guatemala has continued to issue its own currency, the quetzal (GTQ), named after the national bird. Introduced in 1925, the quetzal is subdivided into 100 centavos. The commonly used denominations include 1 centavo, 5 centavos, 10 centavos, 25 centavos, 50 centavos, 1 quetzal, 2 quetzales, and 5 quetzales. These coins, typically brass-plated steel, feature the national coat of arms on one side and the denomination on the other, reflecting Guatemala's cultural heritage and national symbols.
