In 2002, Italy adopted the euro (EUR) as its official currency, replacing the Italian lira. Italy's current euro coin denominations include 1 cent, 2 cents, 5 cents, 10 cents, 20 cents, 50 cents, 1 euro, and 2 euro.
The 1 and 2 cent coins are crafted from copper-plated steel, while the 5, 10, 20, and 50 cent coins are made from Nordic gold. These coins often depict Italy's rich cultural heritage, landmarks, and historical significance.
The 1 euro coin's inner core comprises three layers: copper-nickel, nickel, and nickel-brass, while the outer ring is crafted from nickel-brass. Similarly, for the 2 euro coins, the inner core consists of copper-nickel, while the outer ring comprises three layers: nickel-brass, nickel, and copper-nickel. This composition gives these coins a distinct two-color appearance.
The €1 and €2 coins depict the denomination on the left, the currency, map of Europe and twelve stars which symbolize the unity and harmony among the member states of the European Union. The reverse side of the €1 and €2 euro coins may feature iconic Italian symbols, landmarks, or historical figures.
