Before Kuwait gained independence in 1961, it used the Indian rupee as its currency. The Indian rupee was replaced by the Gulf rupee in 1959. However, after independence, Kuwait issued its own currency, the Kuwaiti dinar (KWD), in 1961.

Since then, Kuwait has maintained its dinar currency, adjusting denominations and issuing new coins. The dinar is subdivided into 1,000 fils, providing flexibility in smaller transactions.

The Kuwaiti dinar has coins in circulation with denominations of 1 fils, 5 fils, 10 fils, 20 fils, 50 fils, and 100 fils. The 1 fils coin is made from nickel-brass, while the 5 and 10 fils coins are composed of brass-plated steel. The 20, 50, and 100 fils coins are crafted from stainless steel.

Each coin differs in size, design, and metal composition. The designs generally reflect elements of Kuwaiti culture and history. These coins commonly display a dhow, a traditional Kuwaiti sailing vessel, and the national emblem.
