Malaya / 1 Products

Malaya was a set of states on the Malay Peninsula that were part of the British Commonwealth. The 11 states from the Malay Peninsula were the Unfederated Malaya States of Johore, Kelantan, Kedah, Perlis, and Trengganu; the Federated Malay States of Negri-Sembilan, Pahang, Perak, and Selangor; and the former members of the Straits Settlements Penang and Malacca.

Malaya was occupied by the Japanese during the Second World War. The Federation of Malaya was established on 1 February 1948. It was a self-governing colony of the British empire.

Malaya was granted full independence on August 31, 1957. It became part of Malaysia in 1963.

The Malayan dollar was the currency until 1953. It was introduced in 1939, replacing the Straits dollar at par.

Malayan dollar coins featured King George VI and came in denominations of ½ cent, 1 cent, 5 cents, 10 cents, and 20 cents. The ½-cent and 1 cent coins were square and made of bronze. Meanwhile, the remaining denominations were round. They were made of silver until 1945 and were replaced by cupronickel until 1948. Due to wartime conditions, the ½ cent coin was discontinued after 1940 while the 1 cent coin reduced its size. The coins were minted at Calcutta, Bombay, and the Royal Mint.
