Silver bullion is used as an alternative currency for investors due to its value and acceptance around the world. Silver bullion can come in the form of silver bars, silver ingots, silver rounds and silver coins.
The American Silver Eagle was authorized by the Liberty Coin Act from July 9th 1985 and was released to the public on November 24th, 1986. They are produced by the San Francisco Mint, the Philadelphia Mint and the West Point Mint and are offered in 1 troy oz (31.103g) of silver.
The obverse design of these silver coins is based on Adolph A. Weinman’s “Walking Liberty” that was originally used on the half dollar coin of 1916. Liberty is depicted as a woman carrying branches walking towards the sun. The words “LIBERTY” and “IN GOD WE TRUST” are engraved on the obverse along with the year.
On the reverse is a modified Great Seal of the United States designed by John Mercanti. It features a bald eagle grasping 13 arrows, 13 olive branches and 13 stars above. The words “E PLURIBUS UNUM” are on a ribbon held by the eagle’s beak and translates to “Out of many, one”. On the outside are the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “1OZ. FINE SILVER~ONE DOLLAR”.
