On January 1, 1912, the Republic of China was formed, putting the 5,000 years of the monarchy to an end. Chinese military Yuan Shikai who established the Beiyang Army became the first president of the republic. During the Republican period, a tremendous number of banknotes were circulating across the country issued by provincial banks from both National and Communist regions. Among the national issuers of banknotes is the Commercial Bank of China which was previously known as the Imperial Bank, the Bank of Communications, Farmers Bank of China, Bank of China, and the Central Bank of China.

A number of military banknotes were also introduced. Issuers of such banknotes include the Republican Government of China, Anhwei Provincial Military, Kwangsi Military, Republican China Military Bank An Hwei, and Bank of Szechuan.

Among the military issues are the set of dollar banknotes introduced by the Republican China Military Bank An Hwei in 1912 had identical color schemes as well as design concepts. The notes come with green, red, and black combinations and bear text in Chinese. Their obverse design depicted a pagoda while on their reverse layout were two flags crossed together.

Meanwhile, the Bank of Szechuan released banknotes for military purposes only. The dates of these banknotes were based on the chronology of the mytho-historical legend Yellow Emperor, Huangdi who was believed to rule in 2697 BCE. The 1 yuan from this series had brown, black, and green colors and displayed Qing Dynasty banners on its obverse while the legal clause was shown on the reverse. The lithographed banknote had no watermarks and security threads.
