Modern Serbia is located in the Balkans region of South Eastern Europe. It was settled by various nomadic tribes during the 6th century and has also been under the realm of influence of various empires. It was under Ottoman rule up until the late 1800’s. The first Serbian Dinar banknotes were issued after the Ottomans withdrew from the region. The denominations ranged from 1 to 100 Dinars. The Yugoslavian Dinar eventually replaced it. Eventually Yugoslavia fell apart and the Serbian Dinar began to circulate once again. The modern Serbian Dinar banknotes were issued in 2003. They are rather colorful banknotes, and they range in denominations of 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500, 1000, 2000, and 5000 Dinar. The banknotes feature images of notable Serbian musicians, politicians, inventors, historians and educators. The blue 100 Dinar banknote features Nikola Tesla who is a Serbian American inventor most notable for Tesla coil and also the alternating current motor. He is very respected for his work to this day.
