Republic of the Congo / 0 Products

The Republic of the Congo is situated on the western coast of Central Africa, along the equator in the central-western side of sub-Saharan Africa. It is bordered by Gabon to the west, the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the southeast, Cameroon to the northwest, the Atlantic Ocean to the southwest, the Central African Republic to the northeast, and the Angolan exclave of Cabinda to the south.

The mixed economy of Congo depends heavily on the oil sector. It is the fourth-largest oil producer across the Gulf of Guinea, making the country prosper in the middle of economic and political instability in some parts of the country. As a Central African country, the Republic of the Congo uses the Central African CFA francs as its monetary unit.

In 1974, the Bank of the Central African States released banknotes for its members for the first time, the Central African Republic, Cameroon, Gabon, Chad, and the Republic of the Congo, bearing a standard design on the reverse. However, the design on the front varies for each country which also includes the name of the state in French. For the Republic of the Congo, banknotes include “Republique Populaire du Congo” or the People’s Republic of Congo.

When the country was renamed the Republic of the Congo in 1991, another set of notes was released, carrying the same design as the preceding issues but with the new name on the front.
