Netherlands Antilles / 8 Products

The Netherlands Antilles (also known as Dutch Antilles) referred to a group of five islands in the Caribbean Sea that formerly constituted an autonomous part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

The island group was made of two subgroups: the northern group— which comprised of Sint Eustatius, Saba, and Sint Maartin— and the southern group—which comprised of Curacao and Bonaire. Aruba was once part of the southern group of islands until 1986, when it seceded from the federation to become a separate Dutch territory. The northern group of islands was locally known as “Windward” and lied within the Leeward Islands group of the Lesser Antilles chain.

The Netherlands Antilles covered a total area of 987.7 square kilometers. Curacao was the largest island of the Netherlands Antilles. It also hosted the capital of Netherlands Antilles, Willemstad, until its dissolution in 2010.

The currency used in Netherlands Antilles was the Netherlands guilder. One guilder was equivalent to 100 cents. The notes of the Netherlands Antilles were denominated in guilders, expressed on the notes using the Dutch word gulden.

The first series of Netherlands Antilles notes were issued by the state. The very first Netherlands Antillean note was the 2.5 guilder note from 1955. It was a blue note that featured a docked ship and the coat of arms. The state also issued a 1-guilder note and a 2.5 guilder note in 1970 but both were withdrawn from circulation.

The Bank of the Netherlands Antilles (Bank van Nederlandse Antillen) officially took over central bank responsibilities in 1962.

The first series of banknotes were issued by the bank in 1962. The denominations included in the series were 5 guilders, 10 guilders, 25 guilders, 50 guilders, 100 guilders, 250 guilders, and 500 guilders. The notes featured an allegorical woman, views of different islands, and the coat of arms of Netherlands Antilles.

In 1979, the bank issued a new series of banknotes. These notes had a similar design to the 1962 series. However, the coat of arms was updated, and the allegorical woman was replaced by the Statuut monument in Willemstad.

In 1986, the Bank of the Netherlands Antilles issued a new series of banknotes. These notes featured native birds on the front and the bank logo at the back. Aruba became an autonomous country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands and began issuing its own banknotes. The bank updated the security features of the notes, including Omron rings and gold foil patches. The notes circulated until 2016.
