The Republic of Slovenia is situated in Central Europe reaching the Alps and the Mediterranean, bordered by Hungary to the northeast, the Adriatic Sea to the southwest, Austria to the north, Italy to the west, and Croatia to the southeast. The country has a mountainous terrain and has been home to various Germanic, Romance, and Slavic cultures and languages.

Slovenia was a successor state of Yugoslavia and is now a member of the European Union. Just like other member nations of the European Union, Slovenia has a developed economy. It has close ties with Germany in the trading and export industry.

Before the introduction of the euro on January 1, 2007, Slovenia’s currency was the tolar from October 8, 1991, which replaced the Yugoslav dinar. The first tolar provisional banknotes feature on the obverse the country’s tallest mountain, Triglav. The reverse design depicts Duke Stone and a Carniolan honey bee. These notes only bear the respective denomination but have no indication of the currency name. In September 1992, the Bank of Slovenia introduced tolar banknotes designed by Miljenko Licul and Zvone Kosovelj, bearing portraits drawn by Rudi Spanzel. Except for the 10,000 tolarjev which was printed by Giesecke & Devrient, these paper bills were produced by De La Rue.
