The United States has been celebrating the Fourth of July as a federal holiday since 1941. Festivities are the main way to observe they day. They range from throwing patriotic picnics to casual family barbeque gatherings, to fireworks, concerts, and parades. Read along to learn about banknotes that remind us of Independence Day.

The celebration of Independence Day dates back to the 18th century at the time of the American Revolution, when the Continental Congress pushed for independence from Great Britain on July 2, 1776. A committee of five that included Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, Roger Sherman, Robert R. Livingston, and Thomas Jefferson was appointed to draft a formal statement detailing the grounds for the breakup with Great Britain. Finally, the Declaration of Independence was formally adopted by the Congress on July 4th, marking the day as the dawn of American Independence. 

US Independence Day Banknotes 

The obverse of the United States of America – USA 100 Dollar banknote from 2006 flaunts the face of Benjamin Franklin. He is one of the five delegates of the Second Continental Congress. Their roles is to draft the Declaration of Independence. Benjamin Franklin also negotiated the 1783 Treaty of Paris which brought the Revolutionary War to an end. On the reverse of the banknote lies the Independence Hall in Philadelphia. It is the former Pennsylvania State House, where the Continental Congress met and also where the signing of the declaration occured.

On the obverse of the United States of America 2 Dollar Banknote from 2012 is a portrait of Thomas Jefferson. He was an advocate of democracy and republicanism. Thomas Jefferson also wrote most parts of the Declaration of Independence. On the reverse of the banknote is a piece of art from John Trumbull. It represents the day of introduction of the first draft of the Declaration of Independence, to the Second Continental Congress. The painting illustrates Thomas Jefferson standing with John Adams, Roger Sherman, Robert Livingston, and also Benjamin Franklin. They all present the document before John Hancock who was the president of the Congress.
