Konstantin Tsiolkovsky was born on September 17, 1857 in Russia. He was born into a humble family but, he would go on to become a great scientist and engineer. He made many important contributions to the field of aeronautics and astronautics and contributed to studies on aerodynamics. His work has inspired generations of scientists and engineers who have continued his legacy by building rockets, satellites and other technologies that have helped us explore our universe today.

Early Life

One interesting fact about Tsiolkovsky is that at a young age he became deaf as a side effect of an illness. This barred him from attending normal schools so essentially, he had to teach himself everything. He became interested in science and mathematics as a child and went on to study at a school in Moscow before moving on to become a teacher. During his time studying in Moscow, he used a hearing aid to be able to listen and learn during lectures.

Eventually Tsiolkovsky began writing about space travel, which led him to become one of the pioneers of rocketry. He wrote many books about space exploration; these ideas were considered radical at the time but have since been proven correct. During the early 20th century his work was not recognized but, after continuing in his research his work was eventually recognized by the USSR and he was commended for his work towards the end of his life. Tsiolkovsky died on September 19, 1935, at the age of 78; however, his work has inspired generations of scientists and engineers who have continued his legacy by building rockets, satellites and other technologies that have helped us explore our universe today.

Remembering Konstantin Tsiolkovsky

Transnistria 1 Ruble Nickel Plated Steel Coin from 2017 to celebrates the 160th Anniversary of Konstantin Tsiolkovsky. Featured on its obverse are the coat of arms of the Transnistrian Moldovan Republic, the denomination, and the date. The reverse of the coin depicts a portrait of rocket scientist Konstantin Tsiolkovsky. Decades earlier in 1987 the Soviet Union also released a 1 Ruble coin honoring Tsiolkovsky. It commemorates 130 years since his birth. The obverse side features the Soviet Union coat of arms and the reverse side features a portrait of Tsiolkovsky with a rocket and stars from space in the background. In addition he has been honored with statues, towns and museum named after him.
