On February 15, 2024 the National Bank of the Kyrgyz Republic announced the introduction of 3 new banknotes as part of their Kyrgyzstan 5th series of Som banknotes. This is in continuation of last years 200, 500, 1000 Som banknote release. These newly released banknotes come in denominations of 20, 50, 100 Som. The purpose of this release is to increase security features and make it harder against counterfeiters but, it’s also a way for Kyrgyzstan to showcase their history and culture. 3rd Series

Before we show off the newest banknotes Kyrgyzstan 5th series we’ll show off some banknotes from their 3rd series banknote family which circulated from 1997 – 2005. One example is the Kyrgyzstan 20 Som, 2002. It is an ochre and red note from the third series. Its obverse side features the poet Togolok Moldo. Its reverse side features the Manas Mausoleum. Security features include a windowed security thread with demetalized 20 COM and a watermark of Togolok Moldo with an electrotype 20.

Another example is the Kyrgyzstan 50 Som, 2002. It is a red and violet banknote. Its obverse side features Czarina Kurmanjan Datka (Alai Tsaritsa). Its reverse side shows the 11th-century Uzgen architectural complex with a minaret and mausoleum. Security features include a windowed security thread with a demetalized 50 COM and a watermark of Kumanjan Datka with an electrotype 50.

Finally we have the Kyrgyzstan 100 Som, 2002. Colored in shades of green, blue and purple. The obverse side shows the Kyrgyz poet and singer Toktogul Satylganov. The reverse side features the Khan-Teniri mountain peak. This uncirculated banknote uses a windowed security thread with demetalized 100 COM and contains a watermark with a Toktogul Satylganov and electrotype 100 design.

4th Series

The 4th series circulated since 2009. These banknotes were just replaced with the introduction of the 5th series. Kyrgyzstan 20 Som, 2016. Featured on the obverse of this orange banknote is the Alai Tsaritsa or the Queen of the South Czarina Kurmanjan Datka. The back of the paper bill depicts the 11th-century Uzgen architectural center showing the minaret and the mausoleum with mountains in the background. The banknote comes with a watermark that reflects Czarina Kurmanjan Datka. It also bears a windowed security thread with demetalized 50 COM.

An old version is the Kyrgyzstan 50 Som, 2016. This is a red banknote from the 4th series. Its obverse side features the poet and educator Togolok Moldo. Its reverse side shows the Tash-Rabat and mountains. Security features include a windowed security thread with a demetalized 20 COM and a watermark of Togolok Moldo.

Finally here is the Kyrgyzstan 100 Som, 2016. This is part of the fourth series of banknotes to use De La Rues Mask security feature. Its obverse side contains Kyrgyz text and the portrait of Kyrgyz poet Toktogul Satylganov. Its reverse side contains Kyrgyz text and a view of a hydroelectric power station. Other security features include a holographic stripe, a windowed security thread with demetalized 100 COM, and a watermark of Toktogul Satylganov with electrotype 100. The note is 132 mm long and 63 mm wide. It is in uncirculated condition.

The New Kyrgyzstan 5th Series Banknotes

The new 5th series Som banknotes feature the same figures, scenery and even color as the 4th generation banknote. However their overall design has changed and they now have upgraded security features such as a new security thread, color shifting ink, a watermark and an iridescent strip to name a few.
