On November 24, 2023 Bank Al-Maghrib (Central Bank of Morocco) announced the introduction of new coin family ranging from 10 Centimes – 10 Dirhams as well as a brand new 100 Dirhams banknote. This new series of coins and banknotes are dedicated to Moroccan cultural heritage, development, and its unity with the rest of the African continent. Read along to learn about the new Morocco 100 Dirhams for 2023 as well as the previous generations that it replaced.
The first ever 100 Dirhams to feature Mohammed VI is the Morocco 100 Dirhams, first introduced in 2002. It is brown in color and the obverse side shows Kings Mohammed VI, Mohammed V, and Hassan II, the mausoleum of Mohammed V in Rabat, an OVI pentagon, and a brooch as a registration device. The reverse side features a brooch, men holding flags, participating in The Green March in Tarfaya in 1975, a star morphing into a dove, nautilus shells, and brooches.
The following generation of banknotes featuring King Mohammed VI is the Morocco 100 Dirhams, 2012. It’s colored in brown, yellow, violet. Its obverse side features King Mohammed VI, a Moroccan door, a green-to-gold crown SPARK, and the national coat of arms. Its reverse side shows a wind turbine farm, a Toureg tent, and three camels with riders. Security features include a 4-mm wide green-to-gold RollingStar windowed security thread, and a watermark of King Mohammed VI with an electrotype 100. It is the first note in the world to use the G&D RollingStar security thread.
Morocco 100 Dirhams Banknote, 2023. The banknote is colored in brown and gold like the previous generations. The obverse side features a large portrait of King Mohammed VI, the coat of arms of Morocco on the right-hand side. In addition to arcs from the Hassan II Mosque which is located in Casablanca. The reverse side features an image of Place of Mechouar in Laayoune, tiznit dakhla expressway symbolized by the road, and finally you can see a group of people celebrating Tan-Tan Moussem social celebrations.
