After Mozambique gained independence from Portugal in 1975, the newly created Government of Mozambique took over all operations of the previous colonial government. The newly independent Central Bank of Mozambique (Bank of Mozambique) was established on May 17, 1975. The Metical currency was then introduced in 1980. Forward 50 Years, the Bank of Mozambique is now celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Central Bank and the 45th anniversary of the creation of the national Metical. To accompany this milestone the Bank of Mozambique also introduced a brand new banknote and coin family on June 16, 2024. These new banknotes feature elements from national history, fauna, education, marine resources, and the agriculture of the country.

Before we introduce the new Mozambique banknote family let’s look at some of the outgoing Metical banknote family. One example is the Mozambique 20 Meticais, 2017. It’s colored inviolet and its made out of polymer. Its obverse side features Samora Moises Machel and the bank logo. Its reverse side shows a rhinoceros. Because this note is made of polymer, it does not have a security thread. However, it has a shadow image of Samora Moises Machel.

Another example of the outgoing banknote family is the Mozambique 50 Meticais, 2017. It’s colored in orange and yellow and it’s made out of polymer. Its obverse side features Samora Moises Machel and the bank logo. Its reverse side shows three kudus. Because this note is made of polymer, it does not have a security thread. However, it has a shadow image of Samora Moises Machel.

Finally, lets look at the new Mozambique banknote family for 2024. It comes in denominations ranging from 20 – 1,000 Meticais. The 20, 50, 100 Meticais are made of polymer and have see through windows. While the 200, 500, 1000 Meticais are made of paper. All six banknotes feature a portrait of former 1st president Samora Machel on the front. The reverse side shows images of the mountainside, antelope, local fruits, a pack of lions, fishing boats, and a family of elephants. Are you excited about this new banknote release?
