On September 3, 2024 the National Bank of Rwanda officially put into circulation 2 new banknotes. They are redesigned versions of the Rwanda 2000 and 5000 Francs banknotes. They feature new artwork and increased security features to stay ahead of counterfeiters. They feature art dedicated to Rwandan culture and architecture.
Let’s look at the previous design that’s being replaced. An example is the Rwanda 2,000 Francs, 2014. This is the second largest denomination banknote in the Rwandan Franc family. It is violet in color. The obverse side shows woven basket in gold-to-green SPARK, hills, and a communication antenna and parabolic antenna. The reverse side features coffee beans. This banknote uses a windowed security thread with demetalized BNR and contains a watermark with a coat of arms and electrotype BNR design.
Finally the largest denomination is the Rwanda 5,000 Francs, 2014. It has a color combination of lilac, brown, and orange. Its obverse side features a mountain gorilla in the Volcano National Park and a gorilla in gold-to-green SPARK. On the back of the paper bill are two woven baskets. The banknote bears a windowed security thread with a demetalized BNR. It also has a watermark that reflects the national emblem and an electrotype BNR. This particular Rwanda 5,000 Franc banknote is in uncirculated condition.
The Newst Rwanda 2000 & 5000 Francs Banknotes
The Rwanda 2,000 Francs version for 2024 comes in a clear violet color. The obverse side features an image of Lake Kivu with a mountain view. In the upper left hand corner you can also find an image of color changing basket. On the reverse side of the banknote you can find an image of coffee beans to symbolize the countries industry. Security features include a wide windowed security thread in which the micro text reads “BNR” and the number “2000” changes color from green to blue depending on direction that the note is taken, located on the left-hand side of the note.
Now the Rwanda 2,000 Francs, 2024 is colored in lilac. On the front design you can find a large image of the “Kigali Convention Center”. One security feature is a color changing gorilla. On the reverse side you can find an image of two small hand woven baskets. Security features include a windowed security thread in which the micro text reads “BNR” and the number “5000” changes color from red to green depending on direction that the note is taken, located on the left side of the note.
