In the early 1800’s after dealing with the British and getting into skirmishes with them they eventually started forming treaties with them and they came to be known as Trucial States. The Trucial States were a group of sheikhdoms, which were signatories to treaties with the British government to receive peace and protection from the British. In exchange the British received exclusive trading rights in the region. However it’s tribal rulers maintained an uneasy relationship with British authorities and a reputation for being quite independent.
As with the rest of the Gulf region, the oil boom of the 1960s had a major impact on UAE. Oil was discovered in Abu Dhabi in 1958 and production began in 1962/1963. The discovery led to an economic boom that transformed Abu Dhabi into one of the wealthiest countries in all of Asia. However, this wealth did not benefit all members equally and over time resentment grew between those who had benefited from the boom and those who were left behind.
The discovery also led to political changes as well, since it enabled leaders to deal more effectively with what had previously been an unstable situation. Leaders sought out ways to ensure stability both inside their own borders (by forming closer connections among themselves) as well as outside them (by creating formal relations with other nations). In 1971 these efforts culminated in formation of UAE; it became independent from Britain on December 2nd 1971. Since 1971 when it gained independence from Britain under Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan (1918–2004), who became its first president until his death in 2004.
Since it’s independence, the UAE has undergone a remarkable transformation from an impoverished region of small desert principalities to a modern state with large-scale industrial and military infrastructure. The 2nd of December has come to be known as National Day in the country. During this year’s National Day a new United Arab Emirates 1000 Dirham banknote has been announced.
