Pakistan, the land of “pure” people, is a country that has been inhabited for thousands of years. Pakistani culture is deeply rooted and a mix of different past Empires and cultures. It was conquered by Alexander the Great in 326 BC and remained under Greek rule until 273 BC when they were defeated by Ashoka, Emperor of India. The Punjabis were conquered by Mahmud of Ghazni around 1000 AD; during this period, Islam became prevalent amongst the population who were ruled by various local Islamic dynasties until 1398 when Babur established the Mughal Empire. Despite several attempts at independence to establish themselves as an independent state over the centuries by various peoples throughout their territory, it wasn’t until 1947 that they successfully secede from Britain after partitioning with India. Pakistan is a country of more than 200 million people, located in the heart of South Asia. Pakistan covers an area of 803,940 square kilometers and is the world’s sixth largest country by size. Its capital is Islamabad and the largest city is Karachi. There are approximately 300 languages and dialects spoken throughout the country, Urdu being the national language, as well as English. Though Islam is practiced by 95% of the population there are also other religions practiced in various parts of Pakistan. The ethnic background varies widely among these populations.

The New Pakistan 75 Rupees

Earlier this year the State Bank of Pakistan (Central Bank of Pakistan) announced that a new commemorative 75 Rupee would be released later this year. It commemorates 75 years of independence. It joins the group of countries with rather strange denomination banknotes. For example, countries like Indonesia with its 75,000 Rupiah, Fiji 88 Cents, and Fiji 7 Dollars. More and more countries are jumping on the bandwagon for commemorative banknotes with unusual denominations.

The new Pakistan 75 Rupees is colored in various shades of green and it also features a blend of modern artistic and also traditional patterns. The obverse side features 4 portraits of prominent figures in the founding of Pakistan. Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah is known as the face for the fight for independence. You can find his portrait on modern day Pakistani banknotes. Sir Syed Ahmad Khan was a Muslim reformer who advocated for education so people would advance and flourish in the modern day. Allama Muhammad Iqbal was a philosopher who was essential in the idea of a separate nation for Muslims. Mohtarma Fatima Jinnah was a Pakistani politician and one of the founding leaders of Pakistan. On the right hand side you can find a 75 to symbolize the denomination and 75 years of independence too.

The reverse side of the Pakistan 75 Rupees banknote is dedicated to climate change and also the artwork comes from artist Sara Khan. The national animal of Pakistan is the Markhor goat. An image of it is in the very center. In addition the deodar cedar is the national plant of Pakistan and it also featured on the banknote. What do you think about this latest release?
