The Renaissance, which literally means “rebirth,” was a period of time between 14th and 17th century that saw the rise of humanism and the development of science, culture and art. It began in Italy and eventually spread to the rest of Europe. During this time people started looking to the classical world (ancient Greece and Rome) for inspiration rather than to the church. The Renaissance was not just an artistic movement but also a time where there was increased trade, exploration, and discovery. Many people think that it is one of the most important times in history because it was such a big turning point for humanity.
Changes Inspired By the Renaissance
The Renaissance brought about some serious changes to society. For example, during this time people started thinking differently about religion than they did before; they came up with new ideas about how God interacts with humans and what role He plays in their lives now that they’ve discovered science can explain how things work on Earth (and beyond). During the Renaissance people were not only interested in displaying their wealth but also learning and knowledge.
Humanism, which was a form of thought that valued human dignity and worth, was very influential during this time. Humanists believed in individuals over institutions and encouraged the study of ancient Greek and Roman literature.
Humanists also encouraged the study of science, or what we call natural philosophy today. This included physics and astronomy—the study of motion, gravity, growth patterns and other phenomena in nature—as well as chemistry (which combines elements to create new substances) and biology (the study of living organisms).
Notable Artists From the Era
Artists such as Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and Raphael created some of the most famous artworks of all time during this period. One of the most prominent figures in Renaissance art is Leonardo da Vinci. This Italian painter and inventor was known for his ability to depict nature in a way that was realistic yet beautiful. He also created some of the world’s most famous paintings, such as The Last Supper (1495), Mona Lisa (1503) and Lady with an Ermine (1490).
Another great artist from this period is Michelangelo Buonarroti, who lived from 1475-1564. He was known for creating sculptures that were detailed and realistic but also very expressive. He used his own emotions when making them! One example of Michelangelo’s work is David (1504), which shows an idealized man who has been sculpted out of marble.
The Renaissance was an exciting time in history, and we can still see its influence today. It gave birth to many new ideas about art, science and religion. The Renaissance started with Italy but quickly spread across Europe and beyond. This period marked the beginning of modern Europe as well as its end!
