Aurel Vlaicu was an iconic figure in the history of aviation. Born in Romania in 1882, Vlaicu’s passion for aviation and his determination led him to achieve remarkable feats in the field of aeronautics. Aurel Vlaicu’s fascination with aviation began at an early age, fueled by his curiosity, resilience, and unwavering belief in the possibilities of flight. Despite facing numerous challenges and setbacks, Vlaicu remained undeterred in his quest to conquer the skies, dedicating himself to the study of aeronautical engineering and the development of innovative aircraft designs that would revolutionize the field of aviation.

In 1910, Vlaicu achieved a significant milestone when he successfully flew his self-designed and built airplane, the Vlaicu I, marking Romania’s entry into the annals of aeronautical history.
His subsequent aircraft models, including the Vlaicu II and Vlaicu III, further showcased his expertise in aviation technology and his commitment to pushing the boundaries of flight. Aurel Vlaicu’s contributions to aviation have left an indelible mark on the history of flight, inspiring generations of aviators, engineers, and enthusiasts to pursue their dreams and push the boundaries of what is possible. Romania has honored him by placing his portrait on various banknotes such as the Romania 500,000 Lei, 2000. This banknote was issued during a time of hyperinflation. The banknote is colored in shades of yellow, green, blue, and orange. It is also made out of polymer. Its obverse side contains an edelweiss flower (Leontopodium alpinum), a BNR monogram, an airplane propeller, a portrait of Aurel Vlaicu, a vertical stripe in gold OVI with a latent image of the Aurel Vlaicu monument and a BNR pattern. Its reverse side features the Vlaicu II airplane, motor, the head of a mountain eagle (Aquila chrysaetos), and a BNR monogram. Other security features include a simulated solid security thread, a shadow image of Aurel Vlaicu and a BNR monogram, and a starburst registration device.
It’s also featured on the current Romania 50 Lei, 2009 which maintains a lot of the same design features as the previous 500,000 version but, this one has had several zeros removed.
