When banknote printers/mints decide to print new banknotes the process is large and time consuming from creation of the banknote design, budget, engraving of the plates used to print them, raw materials being used, paper or polymer, security features. When the actual banknotes are printed they don’t come out of a machine 1 by one individually with serial numbers and designs printed on them. They are printed in large sheets similar to that of a post stamp. They are then cut into their final form, bundled together and sealed. Someone thought it would be very fancy to have a full uncut sheet as a decorative piece in their office or home to show off to people and feel like a big shot or possibly to show to commercial banks as an educational piece but, that’s what Specimen banknotes are for so?

Popularity of the Uncut Banknote Sheet

USD uncut banknote sheets started being sold as collector pieces in the early 80’s by the US federal reserve. Ever since they are regularly advertised as for sale and now with the booming online retail market the Federal Reserve sells and ships them directly to consumers through their online shop. They come in various denominations and in various quantities like 2 per sheet, 5 per sheet, 40, per sheet etc. It all depends on how much money you have to spend. The price is then higher than the actual face value since its considered a commodity but, legally the banknotes are still worth the face value.

For example an uncut sheet of 4 – $1 USD is worth $4 if you take a pair of scissors and cut, them up and use them to pay for a slice of pizza. The value can range anywhere from 10-30% of the face value so a uncut sheet of 4 – $100 bills with a face value of $400 can sell online for $480, that’s a 20% mark up but, hey it includes a folder to protect them from bending and you can show it off to your coworkers, friends and family. World Variations

Various other countries have followed the trend of making and selling uncut sheets as collectors items. Countries such as Ukraine, Bahamas, Netherlands, Lebanon, Kyrgyzstan, Iraq, Mexico and Fiji have also started following the trend. For example the Ukraine 1 Hryvnia, 2018 comes in 60 PCS per sheet that’s 10 rows of 6 banknotes. The banknotes are colored in blue and yellow. The front side depicts Vladimir the Great, the Grand Prince of Kiev. The back of the note shows Vladimirs burg within walled fortifications in Kiev. An eagle, a cross, an ax, a mace, and a sword are also visible on this banknotes reverse. One can imagine these being framed and put up in an office.

A more conservative piece (smaller in size) would be the green Mexico 200 Pesos, 2008. This uncut sheet comes with 3 banknotes still connected. These notes commemorate the bicentennial of the countrys independence. The front side features a banner-from Jesus Enrique Emilio de la Helguera Evans painting Don Miguel Hidalgo. The reverse side bears the Angel of Independence on Paseo de la Reforma in the capital Mexico City.
