Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan was the United Arab Emirates’ founding father. He united the seven emirates and also became the first president of the union. Sheik Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan ruled Abu Dhabi for over 30 years. After his older brother Shakhbut bin Sultan Al Nahyan was removed from sheikhdom through a bloodless coup. Since the establishment of the union, the UAE has been demonstrating a recognizable national identity. Its government system is directed towards a modern administrative structure while preserving the country’s heritage.

At the age of 86, Zayed died from health complications on November 2, 2004. He is buried in the courtyard of the new Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. Following his death, Zayed’s eldest son, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan assumed the role of the ruler of Abu Dhabi. In addition to president of the United Arab of Emirates.

Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan Banknotes 

This United Arab Emirates 50 Dirham Banknote was introduced in 2021, marking the 50th anniversary of the foundation of the United Arab Emirates on December 2, 1971. Centered on the front side of the banknote are the seven founding fathers holding the UAE flag. On the left is the memorial to the martyrs of the Emirates. It is also known as the Oasis of Dignity. The monument was built across Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. It honors all Emiratis who lost their lives in the line of duty. The banknote’s reverse depicts Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan signing the union document. The Etihad Museum is also shown in the background.

On the reverse of this 50 Dirham from 1982 is Fort Jahili, along with the country’s national bird, the saker falcon. Construction of the fort dates to 1891 around the Al-Jahili Oasis under the rule of Zayed bin Khalifa Al Nahyan. He is also known as Zayed the Great or Zayed the First, the grandfather and namesake of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. Fort Jahili was designed to protect the palm farmers. Another banknote featuring him is the UAE 100 Dirhams, 2018 which was also released to celebrate national day.
