Belize is a small tropical nation in Central America. It is known for its rain forests, birds and unspoiled beaches. In 1840 it because a British colony and was called British Nicaragua. As paper money because more common, English banknote printers began printing paper money for this colony, many of which would include portraits of the reigning King or Queen. Belize became independent of England in 1981 and introduced its first banknote series shortly after that. The bank used a portrait from 1960 of Queen Elizabeth’s for the Belize dollar.series. In 1990, they replaced the 1960 portrait with a 1977 portrait of the Queen that commemorated her Silver Jubilee. This 1977 depiction has been used on every Belize banknote since then. While the Queen herself gets older, she remains ageless on both coins and paper money from Belize. Some people might think it is unusual to use the same image and general design for many series. The cost of redesigning banknotes and especially using a new portrait can be very expensive. Along with the cost of educating the public on a new currency design, these two costs might not be worth it for small nations which might only print banknotes every few years.
