Niue is a very small coral island country in South Pacific. Maybe due to its remoteness and size, this island has never been a target for colonization or dominance by European explorers. In 1900, Niue’s leaders asked Queen Victoria of England for protection, and shortly after that New Zealand established legal connections to the country. Niue doesn’t have its own paper currency or coins and instead uses New Zealand polymer banknotes and coins. However, the country does have the rights under New Zealand to issue its own coins. With the approval of the New Zealand bank, Niue has licensed its name and support to enable third parties to produce collectible coins with their name and portrait of Queen Elizabeth on one side, and on the other side images of cartoon characters, movie characters or other collectible cultural images.
