The Island of Saint Helena is one of the remotest countries in the world. It is in the South Atlantic about halfway between South America and the middle of Africa. St. Helena first found value and gained inhabitants as a stopover for ships. In 1833, the East India Company gave the island to the British government. Sort of like nationalizing the truck stops on the M1? Saint Helena became independent in 1981 and its people gained more rights as British citizens over the next 20 years. Their paper banknotes and coins have had Queen Elizabeth II since 1981. In fact, the designs have not changed much in its subsequent series. Saint Helena is also a source of collectible coins and precious metal coins which also have QEII’s portrait on them. Some interesting coins were released in 2013 with an unusual QEII portrait and images of Napoleon.
