Trinidad and Tobago is the southern most island nation in the Caribbean. With over 1 million inhabitants it is also one of the most populous.   It was a British colony until 1962. Until then, the English monarch was shown on its currency. Its first independent paper money issued in 1964 still had a portrait of Elizabeth II on it. She remains “Queen of Trinidad and Tobago” due to the country’s membership in the Commonwealth.  Trinidad and Tobago has flirted with membership in the Eastern Caribbean Money Authority but it has decided to have its own currency even though its exchange rates are tightly linked.  The banknotes   highlight hummingbirds and other birds common to the Islands. Trinidad and Tobago issued a 50 dollar polymer banknote in 2014 showing a carnival vignette, birds and well-integrated metallic effect. This banknote won many awards as the most beautiful banknote of the year.
