Tristan da Cunha is a British Overseas Territory in the South Atlantic. It is extremely remote and can only be reached by a 6-day boat ride from South Africa. It also only has 250 people. But it is an independent country. Its name came from a Portuguese explorer who first sighted the island in the 1500s. Lots of people visited the island but no one settled there until 1810 when a few Americans moved there. It was sparsely populated but England annexed it in 1816 under the rationale to keep it from being used as a base to free Napoleon from his imprisonment on Saint Helena. Tristan da Cunha is too small to have its own currency and uses Saint Helena pounds sterling. On occasion, Tristan da Cunha has issued precious metal coins to commemorate an event or something culturally relevant. In 2014, it issued a collection of silver ‘Explorer’ coins. Each one has Queen Elizabeth II on its reverse side.
