Vanuatu is a Polynesian island nation in the South Pacific. It had been a colony shared between France and England under the name New Herbicides. It became an independent country in 1980 and it stopped using Australian dollars and replaced it with the Vatu. The Vatu's designs have focused on sailing ships, local culture and local birds and flora. In 2010, Vanuatu began using polymer banknotes with bright colors and large clear windows. Today, it also licenses its name and issues precious metal coins based on it Vatu. Like other Commonwealth countries, its coins have Queen Elizabeth II on the reverse side.
