British Antarctic Territory / 0 Products

The British Antarctic Territory (BAT) is the largest British Overseas Territory in Antarctica. Established on March 3, 1962, the territory extends from the south of 60°S latitude and between longitudes 20°W and 80°W to the South Pole, forming a triangular shape. To honor Queen Elizabeth II, the British Overseas Territory named its southern region Queen Elizabeth Land in 2012.

As most of its islands are covered with ice, the territory’s population is only between 50 and 100, consisting of scientists and technicians of the research and support stations maintained by the British Antarctic Survey as well as other organizations, and stations of other countries including Argentina and Chile.

The British Antarctic Survey originated from a secret World War II mission called Operation Tabarin tasked to collect data of biology, geology, and weather in Antarctica.

Although there were no native inhabitants, the territory issued its own postage stamps used by tourists and scientists, and sold to collectors overseas.

It also issued non-circulating 50-pence coins highlighting historical ships, penguins, and events, such as the Boaty McBoatFace Series that commemorates the Launch of Polar research AUV, an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle. The British Antarctic Territory introduced its first legal-tender coin between 2008 and 2009 to celebrate its 100th anniversary of the 1908 British territorial claim.
