The Sultanate of Oman has had a long history using silver coins in circulation and as collectibles. As the silver price has fluctuated so much lately, there has been a lot of interest in silver and other precious metal bullion including the coins from Oman.
In the year 1961 (Islamic 1380 and 1381), Oman and Muscat circulated a silver ½ Saudi Rial that was 50% silver. Like many gulf countries at the time, Oman was emerging from foreign control and the use of foreign currency. There were 850,000 of these coins minted, and they remain highly collectible due to their images and rarity in good condition. They were replaced in 1970 when Oman consolidated into a single country, changed to the Omani rial and began issuing paper currency. The country has issued many numismatic products, many of them colored, to commemorate historical anniversaries, local culture and wildlife including a range of local birds e.g. eagles and a Spotted Sandgrouse. An entire series even highlighted the Royal Opera House and musical instruments.
