The origin of the Philippine Peso dates back to the Colonial era when the Spanish colonized the country. They imported Spanish Dollars made out of silver from Latin America for use. Eventually after independence from Spain the country started issuing its own independent currency. Originally it was backed by its agriculture but, eventually they switched over to the gold/silver standard. This gave way to the future series of Philippine banknotes. The current series of Philippine Peso consists of coins and banknotes in the denominations of 20, 50, 100, 200, 500, and 1000 Pesos. They are all colored in bright colors like orange, red, blue, green, purple, yellow and blue. They feature portraits of former presidents and other politicians. The reverse features images of wildlife scenery and animals. All of the banknotes feature a seal of the Central Bank of the Philippines and a silver security thread.
