Vanuatu’s coinage history reflects its journey from colonial rule to independence. The first post-independence coin, introduced in 1981, was a 50 vatu piece commemorating one year of sovereignty. Initially aimed at collectors and struck in pure nickel, it was soon circulated widely. By 1983, new coins were issued: 1, 2, and 5 vatu in nickel brass, and 10, 20, and 50 vatu in cupro-nickel, replacing both the New Hebrides Franc and Australian currency.

In 1988, a nickel-brass 100 vatu coin was introduced, similar in size to the British 1 pound coin. The 1 and 2 vatu coins were discontinued in 2011 due to their infrequent use, though they remain legal tender, with transactions rounded to the nearest 5 vatu.

A 2015 coinage reform by the Royal Australian Mint introduced new coins: the 5 vatu in copper-plated steel, the 10, 20, and 50 vatu in nickel-plated steel, and the 100 vatu in aluminum-zinc bronze. The Vanuatu coins feature designs that highlight the country’s cultural heritage and national symbols.
