The Egyptian Pound dates back to 1834. It was backed by the gold and silver standard. The original series was made up of strictly coins. No banknotes were issued until 1899. The first Egyptian Pound banknotes consisted of 1, 5, 10, 50 and 100 Pounds. The banknotes are bilingual which means they are written in Arabic on the font and English on the reverse. The current series of banknotes consist of 1, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200 Pounds. They are all mostly earth toned colors and they all feature images of religious sites, the Egyptian coat of arms, and ancient Egyptian monuments like the sphinx and even a statue of Ramses II. They all have traditional Egyptian patterns in the design along the corners and edges.
