The front design honors Bettina von Arnim, one of the prominent figures of the German Romantic Period. Her portrait and a cornucopia are shown with the Wiepersdorf Estate, Bettina von Arnims residence, in the background. The reverse side of the note contains the German Central Bank logo, the Brandenburg Gate, and an open envelope with the signatures of other Romantic artists including Goethe and Clemens Brentano, who are correspondents of von Arnim. Security features of the note include a windowed security thread with demetalized 5 DM and a watermark of Bettina von Arnim and 5. Its dimensions are 122 mm by 62 mm.
